From Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton

On May 5, 2020, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) will be participating in #GivingTuesdayNow, a global day of giving and unity as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19.

In this time of uncertainty, a fundamental truth gives us hope — that together, through Christ, we can do extraordinary things.

On Tuesday morning, we will be inviting our members to show God’s love and their own generosity however they can. Whether we’re helping a neighbor, sharing a skill, giving to our congregations or supporting the ELCA’s COVID-19 Response Fund, our acts of generosity are a way to share our faith during this pandemic.

Ask God to help us see and attend to people who are unseen, forgotten, underserved or ignored in our congregations, communities and society ― elders who are homebound; people who are quiet, incarcerated, homeless or mentally ill; and people living in shelters, care facilities and group homes.

The last weeks feel like years- at least to me. There are others feeling the same way, others who may have less freedom to move around because of increased vulnerability, others who suffer in silence. If you know someone, if you have a neighbor who fits this category, reach out. We share the compassion of Christ in these connections.

As an update- look for information regarding gathering for worship. We are in the planning stages! Also, keep Micah’s Backpack in mind as you shop- Shirley will be at the Dearing Chapel on Wednesday’s from 4-4:15pm for safe, distanced pick-ups.

Thank you for your faithful response to God’s grace.
