Give thanks for parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents whose example and convictions teach children and youth the values of compassion, generosity and respect for one another.
Prayer Ventures, Living Lutheran, May 20, 2020
One of the assignments for Hebrew Scriptures in seminary was to read them – all of the books of the Old Testament. There were a lot of genealogies in the ones designated “histories.” I called them snooze-material- lots of unpronounceable names. In the New Testament, Matthew and Luke record the familial heritage of Jesus. These lists are an important part of the history of God’s way with God’s people as they carry the covenant promises. Relationships are part of the “image of God” noted in the creation stories- as God is the relationship of Trinity, so too we are made for relationship with God, each other and all of creation. Our families provide the most intimate and intense of those relationships apart from the one we have with God.
Let us pray: Triune God, it is your will that humans live in community. Bless family life everywhere and fill our homes with respect, joy, laughter and prayer. Amen.
